VINTAGE BRIDAL HEADPIECES

Have you ever wondered what amazing bridal veils were worn throughout history? well, part of the fun of being a collector is looking back on the history of something. Today's blog is about Vintage Bridal headpieces. The Veil is of course the masterpiece. As long as time, you will see pics of veils on brides. In Mid Evil times, a simple veil cascaded down over the dress usually flowing freely. To hold into place, either a crown of jewels (if of royal blood) was used to hold in place or a wreath made of natural elements if you were of lower class.
During Victorian times and on into the future the Veil still reigned. Longer and fuller, each headpiece got more elaborate with time. In early Hollywood era, usually the trendsetter was a famous actress that was getting married. All brides wanted to copy her, as see in the 1950s with Elizabeth Taylor. This trend continues today with the most recent being Reese Witherspoon wearing her Southern French Veil in her movie...now this is a popular trend today.
What does the future hold? Well...maybe just maybe..a glimpse might be in the last three Haute Couture styles...Lets hope NOT!!!

Who got their Kicks on Route 66

We Know the Hollywood Story..But do you know the rest of the Story?
**********************************
Cyrus Avery used a little known trail from the California Gold Rush that ran through Oklahoma, as he drew plans for the route that would become Route 66. He was successful in his bid to have the new route pass through his home state. This route was designated U.S. Highway 66. On November 11, 1926 a bill was signed in Washington creating the American Highway System. Roads to carry a nation on the move, through hard times, war, and rebirth.
Route 66 would become the most celebrated and famous of these two-lanes.
Route 66 is uniquely American. There are a thousand stories of hope, heartbreak, love, hate, starting over, and new dreams found along the next bend of the highway we call the Mother Road. The story of Route 66 is our story;
No other culture has had the same type of love affair with the automobile, and few have had the wide-open spaces offered by the American West.
Route 66 became the twentieth century version of the Oregon Trail, the golden road to the promised land and has inspired our spirit ever since.

The VINTAGE BRIDE

.jpg)

Brides has worn everything in History from Grass skirts to togas...but the white dress rains supreme...
Through the many eras of the wedding dress, we find our favorite era being the 1950s. The gown during that time were predominately made of lace but there were so many different styles and designs. They were feminine, fun, and mostly romantic.
Boat neck styles were very common. Grace Kelley probably epitomized the 50s with her Priscilla of Boston Chantilly lace gown. After that, dresses really seemed to echo her style. These are a few of our favorite Bridal gowns that we have come across, altered or not and now have for sale on our Etsy site...

CINDYS TRIP TO PORT TOWNSEND, WA
Oh what a sweet man you have when one day he tells you he's whisking you away for a romantic weekend..."Is it somewhere where I can find Vintage Clothing I ask?" "Maybe" is the answer.
Our journey began Saturday Morning April 9th when I picked up my spousal unit from his work at Portland Air Base Fire Dept. Had to pass by the fabulous f-15 on our way off the base... Does it not look like its flying low?
Did i know where we were heading? NOPE!!! I knew soon we were headed North as the Seattle sign loomed ahead.
Along 1-5 Northbound, I always look forward to billboard where a die hard Republican must have purchased this piece for everytime you drive by it there is a wonderful new posting on it. Can you read it?
A couple hrs later, I'm gingerly saying "Oh, look, an Antique store." Soon we are stopping at everyone along the way. Unfortunately, the illusive vintage piece was just that....illusive.
BUT...to no avail..I came across in a little town outside of Olympia Wa. our (Dawnette and I) 5th Drive in Movie Theatre. So cool, i had to photograph it. If you are not already aware...we are on a quest to find over 350 working Drive in Movie Theatres in America still operating.
Anywho....back to my trip. Along the way to this "surprise destination" we saw all kind of oddities..how about driving along and seeing a 20 ft. tall metal bull in a field surrounded by real live cattle that are totally oblivious to the fact that there is a monstrosity taking up their valuable grass.
We take turn toward Port Townsend and now I know where I'm going. For those of you not aware, Port townsend is one of the oldest ports on the west coast. Situated on the Straight of Juan de fuca...(sp) this lovely little town is over 150 years old at least. What is so special about this place is that the original downtown historic buildings still remain and have been painstakingly renovated to their original grandeur. 46 wonderful old brick buildings make up old town Port Townsend. I was in love.
We stayed in the Historic Palace Hotel...built in 1889. It was not always a Hotel but soon became one. When you walk into the Lobby it is like stepping back into time. Gorgeous dark wood, antique furniture and ghostly paintings meet you. A Very long steep staircase takes you to the gorgeous rooms upstairs. Steeped in History, this is a must stay place in my book....just remember, the doors dont close tight, the walls are thin, and you might here footsteps at all hours of the night.
What about that little diner along the way that is a must. FAT SMITTYS....the perfect burger place. Support your local troops and while your at it..suppport this fellow Vet by putting a dollar on his wall and signing it. Food is to die for. Talk about a belly buster...this is it. The Staff was amazing and treated us like a queen and kind. They were so good they actually talked us into ordering not only the famous FAT SMITTY burger, but a fresh blackberry shake and of course Halibut fish and chips. Needless to say...we took our lunch to the motel for dinner to.
A MUST SEE were all the antique stores in the town. After purchasing a few little goodies, i needed a vintage clothing fix. Needless to say...i could not find any...BUT ALAS...that was fine. My whole trip was suppose to be a romantic trip wasn't it? And boy was it!!!
So next time you are looking for a romantic place to visit on a whim, I highly recommend Port Townsend, WA.
Even the fainting couches were original...not sure about the person occupying it though!

The Vintage Easter Bonnet
HAPPY EASTER 2010
One tradition that has been around for many years is the Easter Bonnet. Majority of women try to find the most unique and different bonnet that they can. We felt like amongst our beautiful collection two lovely hats fit the Theme of Easter Bonnet for what might have been worn during their era...
Just a couple Bonnets that could have been used back in the day for Easter day...

A QUEST FOR A VINTAGE DRESS
"A QUEST FOR A VINTAGE DRESS"

Well its that time of year around here, yep those early morning estate sales run by people who are alittle cranky sometimes...We go in like a herd of cattle to scrabble through some beautiful things. Some people are always in a rush...they never say excuse me please they just push and shove...So ladies just remember when you go to these sales at least smile and say excuse me may I squeeze by.........
Stopping at Starbucks over the speaker we Hear...
Hi may I help you my name is Gale
At 6 am that's just to much Cheer...
We pull up to a 1920's house, with a line so Long
To top it off, its raining and coming down Strong.....
We get out and brave the Weather
The lady next to us has a cat on her Sweater......
He try's to crack a joke, he is such a Hoot
OMG we see a 1930's Jantzen Swimsuit
Going thru the closets we gaze at the Past
With these beautiful dresses, she had a Blast...
We find a 1940's dress made of silk so Pure
A wedding dress from the 1950's that reads Couture....
Layers of tulle under this dress its made to Swing
Waiting in line with our dresses in a Pile
The lady who owned these surely had Style......
